Turmeric Milk Haldi Dhoodh

Changing seasons means the temperature is constantly fluctuating and that means cold and coughs are common for this time of year. Turmeric Milk Haldi Dhoodh has long been renowned in Indian culture as being brilliant for treating small ailments and colds.

There are lots of different ways to prepare this nourishing drink bur the main ingredients are Milk (Doodh) and Turmeric (Haldi) powder, any additional ingredients are purely for aroma or sweetness.

I was first introduced to this drink by a follower who advised me to try it when I was unwell, I’ve adapted it to my taste and have enjoyed it ever since!. I use Star Anise, ground cinnamon and honey but you may use cardamom pods, bay leaves and other whole spices (clove, cinnamon sticks etc.) if you prefer.

Serves 1

You will need: for Turmeric Milk Haldi Dhoodh

500ml milk
1/2 tsp turmeric powder (use more if you prefer)
1 star anise
a pinch of ground cinnamon
set/clear honey (to taste)

Method:

1. Bring to boil 500ml milk in a milk pan with 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1 star anise, a pinch of ground cinnamon and set honey (I used 1.5 tsp)._

2. When the milk hits boiling point, lower heat and simmer for a few minutes to allow the star anise to release it’s aroma. Remove from the heat and use a milk frother to create some froth.

3. Pour into a mug, sprinkle some ground cinnamon over the top and serve immediately.
