This is a a quick recipe guide on how I made my Mirga Fish Steaks which many of you watched over on my instastory on Instagram. I’ve learnt in life that sometimes the best dishes we enjoy are the ones that involve a handful of ingredients and are really quite simple to execute. This is one of those. Bangladeshis are experts when it comes to cooking and eating fish, this rings true for those of us that are settled here in the UK too, we may have grown up away from our land of origin, but there are some things that we have grown up seeing, eating and enjoying. My desire is for people who don’t cook fish often to discover how wonderful it can be when you know how. Whenever I cook this my kids dive in and eat this as a starter with plain rice and they absolutely love it, I hope you all enjoy this too!
You will need: for Mirga Fish Steaks
For marinating fish:
6 Mirga fish steaks cleaned (this will be 3 whole pieces of the centre of the fish, cut into half each to create 6 pieces)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp mixed curry powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp chilli powder (more if you like it spicy)
1/2 tsp coriander powder (optional)
For sauteing onions:
oil
2 medium onions
2 tomatoes (chopped into 4 pieces each)
1/2 – 1 tsp salt (adjust to your taste)
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
5 green chillies sliced
coriander to garnish
Method:
1. Clean the Mirga fish steaks by removing any scales from the exterior. Rub the fish pieces with 1/2 tsp of salt and leave to soak in cold water till for at least 30 mins.
2. Peel and finely slice 2 medium onions, cut 2 tomatoes (into quarters each), slice 5 green chillies and chop some coriander in the meantime.
3. After 30 mins wash the fish pieces with running cold water, all the while massaging the fish to ensure they are thoroughly washed. Drain in a colander before commencing to add the spices.
4. Add 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp mixed curry powder, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp chilli powder and 1/2 tsp coriander powder to the fish steaks and massage well.
5. In a wide frying pan heat some oil and fry the fish pieces till they are golden on one side, then turn over and fry till golden on the other side. Reserve on a plate once complete.
6. In the same frying pan (you may add a little more oil if needed), add the onions along with salt to taste (1/2 – 1 tsp should be enough), saute for a few minutes until soft.
7. Add 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder and fry for two more minutes to remove the rawness of the spice.
8. Add the chopped tomatoes along with the fried fish steaks and fry for a further 2 – 3 minutes.
9. Finish off by adding the sliced chillies and coriander and cooking for 1 more minute.
10. Serve with plain rice and enjoy!

Salam Afelia,
Thank you so much for taking the time to write these recipes. I’m new to cooking so you’ve helped me so much and Alhamdulilah the food tastes so good l. It’s so hard to learn to cook from our mums because they will just say add a bit of this and that, so it’s confusing and then the curry doesn’t taste right . Thanks to you I’ve learnt so much.
I wanted to ask can I follow the same recipe for koi Mas Biran?
