Cheat Doner Kebab

Ok, so everyone loves a Doner Kebab but what do you do when you can’t be bothered going to the takeaway? You make it at home of course! This recipe is my younger sister’s ingenious idea, I’ve adapted it slightly, so all credit goes to her.

The first time I tasted this Cheat Doner Kebab dish at my sister’s house I fell in love with the concept; it was something my younger sister threw together one evening when entertaining friends, a ‘Eureka’ moment for her as I like to call it. She couldn’t wait to cook it for us all and when we did try it we fell head over heels in love with it! My children really love this dish and there are never any leftovers which tells you just how good it is. Because it is important for children to get some nutritional value out of their meals, I have tweaked this recipe to include some fresh vegetables. The recipe is dead simple and you don’t have to be good at cooking to attempt it! This was one of the very first recipes to be posted on my Facebook page back in 2014 and was a huge hit with all of my followers, so here it is for all of my website users. This is a really good dish to have at the dinner table during Ramadan as you can prepare the filling in advance and serve in mini pitta breads as a selection of goodies for Iftar.

Doner kebab meat is hard to replicate at home but the brand of burgers used in this recipe, Tahira (chicken and beef) is actually a really good doner kebab meat ‘replica’. I only use this particular brand when making this recipe, I don’t think standard burgers have the same effect. If you aren’t able to source this brand in the country you are in, try using salami/mortadella instead. I calculate one burger for each person and always make several extra as everyone always wants seconds. I like to add peppers and tomatoes to my filling, you could try adding jalapenos, spring onions or a vegetable of your choice. I serve the Cheat Doner Kebab in pitta bread with salad, dollops of mayonnaise and ketchup/chilli sauce; this is how my local takeaway serves it and it’s delicious. You don’t have to serve this in pitta bread, you can serve the filling in a bun, tortilla or with chips. The amounts in this recipe makes enough for a family of six (which includes four very hungry men), including some extra for seconds, if you need less adjust the other ingredients accordingly. I really hope you enjoy this recipe as much as me, my sisters and my family do!

Serves 6 – 8

You will need: for Cheat Doner Kebab

9 Tahira Chicken & Beef Burgers (I calculate 1 for each person and a few extra for seconds)
4 peeled onions
oil as required
1 1/2 fresh bell peppers (I’ve used half of each colour to make it colourful)
2 tomatoes
3 tbsp ketchup
1 – 2 tbsp soy sauce (light or dark)
1 tsp hot chilli sauce/pickle (I use a brand known as Mr Naga, use more if you want it very spicy)
salt (if required)

To serve:

pitta breads (as required)
cucumber
lettuce
tomatoes
mayonnaise
ketchup

Method:

Cheat Doner Kebab

Cook 9 burgers; I calculate 1 burger for each person as there are six of us, I also add a few extra for whoever wants seconds. I prefer to grill the burgers to cook them through.

While waiting for these to cook, slice 4 onions. This seems like a lot but because we’ll be frying them till they’re totally browned, they hugely reduce in quantity.

Cheat Doner Kebab

In a large wok heat a generous amount of oil, make sure the oil is VERY hot before adding your onions. You want the onions to fry instantly, this helps them to brown quickly. The process may take between 10 – 15 minutes, leave to cook on a full flame but DO NOT add any salt as the onions will become soft and will not brown. Stir occasionally to ensure even browning. Don’t forget to keep an eye on those burgers!

While the onions brown, slice the peppers and tomatoes.

Now begin to make the sauce for your doner; in a small bowl add 3 tbsp ketchup….

Cheat-Doner-Kebab-4

….followed by 1 – 2 tbsp dark/light soy sauce (I use either and both work) and 1 tsp of chilli sauce/pickle (I’ve used a tsp of Mr Naga but any hot chilli sauce will do). By now your onions should be nice and brown, lower the heat while you prep the burgers.

Cheat-Doner-Kebab-5

Chop up your cooked burgers as thin as you want. If you need to stop to let the burgers cool down, just turn off the heat on the onions for a couple of minutes. When you’re done, add your chopped burgers, sliced peppers and tomatoes to the already browned onions, stir and cook for a couple of minutes.

Add your bowl of mixed sauces and stir on a high heat for several minutes. The soy sauce is quite salty and the other sauces also contain salt, taste your doner and only add salt if you feel you need it. The doner kebab filling is done when the peppers are cooked enough but don’t lose their crunch (al dente).

Cheat-Doner-Kebab-6

To serve I run my pitta breads quickly under a tap and shake off the excess water and toast in my toaster. This keeps them soft and they expand, opening up nicely. Cut open the pitta bread, place Cheat Doner Kebab filling inside with salad (I like cucumber and lettuce), squeeze over some mayonnaise and ketchup/chilli sauce to finish.

Add pickled peppers if you have some, as they really complement this dish. Enjoy your Cheat Doner Kebab!

Ahh I so was looking forward to trying this but that brand of burgers contains MSG which I avoid :(. Unsure why much of Asian ready spices and foods contain MSG unless the quality of ingredients is poor and needs a flavour enhancer!? I suppose whichever way you look at it, Doner kebabs are meant to be made from processed meat..just wish it could be healthier as I miss it!

Yes, unfortunately some foods we eat are highly processed and MSG is part and parcel of making cheap food taste good. You could try roasting chicken thighs in the oven with spices instead and then shredding and adding to the onion/pepper mixture in this recipe, it won’t be the same but will be a healthier option. x

I am a vegetarian so I have no idea when it comes to the taste of what I am cooking, essentially I go by the feedback of everyone else. For Iftar this year I actually couldn’t be bothered to do much so made this, following the recipe exactly except substituting the burgers with actual boneless meat which I cut up in slices and it was an absolute hit. It is so simple and easy to make and so and everyone loved it. I served it with chips and the feedback was 10/10

Thank you for this reciepe. It is really an ingenious idea which was very quick and easy to follow! In my family, we are not big beef eaters so we opted for yeh Tahira chicken burgers and it tasted divine. It’s been a few years since I have given up eating takeaway doner kebabs so this was a right treat. I made it for our second iftar of ramandan 2017 and it was enjoyed very much by all in my family who dived in for 3rds! My mother who has never eaten a doner kebab in her life also enjoyed it and that says a lot as she is very fussy with food. The instructions from Afia are very clear and the cooking time wasn’t long at all. Thank you so much for all your generousity with the reciepes! Shanaz x

My husband LOVES this. I cook this every week for him and leave it in the fridge. He has it inside burger buns or warburtons pockets with a few jalapeños. Thank you so much for this recipe. May Allah bless you.

Tried this yesterday for iftar and it was delicious. Big thumbs up from all the family! My 10 year old was literally salivating when it was being made….lol he said it smelt like “monster munch crisps”…I said is that a good thing?? He said yes, I love them! More healthier option then ordering a takeaway aswell. Least you know what’s gone in it (albeit having some faith in Tahira burgers lol)…You’ll soon see me commenting on everything on here, your recipes are that good. Thank you once again. Long may you continue to inspire and teach us! Just wanted to ask if you’ll be moving all your recipes from Facebook to here on your website? The website is very clear and easy to follow. Your nunor bora recipe is only on Facebook at the moment isn’t it? I’m bracing myself for the challenge. ? Felt too incompetent before! Also do you have a recipe for handesh an nikol shomshaa? Would love to try all these things out for myself for once rather than relying on inlaws!!

That’s excellent, I’m so glad your son loved the Doner Kebab and it’s lovely that he compared it to his favourite crisps, lol! Yes at the moment some for the recipes I have are only available on facebook but I shall be moving everything over to the website as soon as I can (it takes an awful lot of time and effort so slowly), we’ve only been up and running since April and there is so much to add in terms of old and new recipes. I shall repost the Naikolor Fob recipe and Nunor Bora recipe on facebook in the meantime for you. I don’t have a measured handesh recipe yet so you will have to wait for that. x

Thank you. I appreciate all the hard work you do in producing this website and as a busy mum! I tried out the nunor bora recipe yesterday and I was so impressed (with your recipe and my skills of course lol) I texted pics to all my family! Only thing is my personal preference is that I’d like it softer so I shall use bit of plain flour instead of ground rice next time. The naikolor fob recipe I shall try as well but I wanted to try it with morrsaa gurr first…I’ve heard it’s easier lol…and I await your handesh recipe eagerly….whenever I ask the elders they give their anthaaz measures (you know ehk angol ehk faw or something similar and ridiculous ). I think it’s important to pass on these traditional recipes to our kids, that’s why what you’re doing is really important so thanks x.

Thank you for the positive feedback (it is hard work) and for giving the recipe a try! Of course not every single recipe satisfies everyone which is why it’s important to do some final tweaking of your own to get it just the way you like it, my family love it firm and crunchy as it is. You are welcome, hope you enjoy the other recipes too. xx

Have to say everyone who is on this website right now is that this recipe is a must must!!!! Oh my word, it tasted so yummy, loved it so much. It actually tasted better than east London lamb donner. I seriously don’t need to buy it from outside anymore all thanks to this wonderful sister that put this recipe up. Thank you sis so much. Xxx.

Haha, thank you for the glowing review, I mean I know it’s good but didn’t think it could compete with an East London lamb doner! You’re welcome and check out some of the other recipes too. 🙂 x

I was a little wary about trying this because I thought nothing beats east London doner kebabs. I was in for a shock cos this tastes so delicious. Why didn’t I think if this? So simple and straightforward alhamduillah.
The second time I made this I added shatkora and it tasted oh so nice. Xxx
